ATEX Identification

EX Symbol II 2 G  Ex ib mb IIC T4 Gb | Tool group: II | Hazardous zone: 1 and 2, 21 and 22
EX Symbol II 2 D  Ex ib mb IIIC T130° Db | Category: 2G and 2D | Temperature class T4

Explanation: II 2 G Ex ib mb IIC T4 Gb

The ATEX marking II 2 G Ex ib mb IIC T4 Gb describes the specific features of a device suitable for use in explosive atmospheres. This marking provides detailed information about the protection types and the application scope of the device. Here is a detailed explanation of each component:

1. II 2 G
II: Equipment group II – The device is suitable for use in explosive atmospheres outside of mining, such as in the chemical industry, refineries, or areas with flammable gases.
2: Category 2 – The device provides a high level of protection and is suitable for areas where an explosive atmosphere due to gases may occasionally occur. Category 2 devices are intended for use in Zone 1, where an explosive atmosphere is expected to occur during normal operation.
G: Gas – The device is certified for use in areas where gas, vapor, or mist can form an explosive atmosphere.

2. Ex
This means "explosion-proof" and indicates that the device has been certified in accordance with the ATEX directive requirements.

3. ib
ib: Intrinsic safety – This protection method ensures that the electrical circuits of the device are designed to prevent sparks or thermal effects that could ignite an explosive atmosphere. The ib protection type is suitable for use in Zone 1, where explosive atmospheres may occasionally occur.

4. mb
mb: Encapsulation – This protection method ensures that electrical components are housed in an encapsulated or potted enclosure, preventing contact with an explosive atmosphere. This helps avoid potential ignition sources.

5. IIC
IIC: Gas group – This indicates that the device is certified for use with the most dangerous and easily ignitable gases, such as hydrogen and acetylene. IIC represents the highest hazard level in the gas group classification.

6. T4
T4: Temperature class – This indicates the maximum surface temperature of the device. T4 means the device will not exceed a surface temperature of 135°C. Devices with a T4 rating are safe to use with many flammable gases, as this temperature is below the ignition point of most gases.

7. Gb
Gb: Equipment protection level – The Gb level indicates that the device can be used in areas where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation (Zone 1). Gb provides a high level of protection, though slightly lower than the highest level, Ga.

Summary:
The device is suitable for use in Zone 1, where explosive gas atmospheres may occasionally occur.
It offers protection through intrinsic safety (ib) and encapsulation (mb), ensuring that no ignition sources arise from electrical components or surface temperatures.
It is approved for use in the most hazardous gas atmospheres of group IIC.
The maximum surface temperature is 135°C (T4), preventing ignition from hot surfaces.
This device is specifically designed for use in explosive gas environments and provides comprehensive protection against potential ignition sources.

Explanation: II 2 D Ex ib mb IIIC T135°C Db

The ATEX marking II 2 D Ex ib mb IIIC T135°C Db describes the characteristics of a device certified for use in explosive atmospheres, particularly in areas where dust can create a potentially explosive environment. Here is a detailed explanation of the individual components:

1. II 2 D
II: Equipment group II – The device is suitable for use in explosive atmospheres outside of mining, such as in food processing, mills, chemical plants, etc.
2: Category 2 – The device provides a high level of protection and is suitable for areas where an explosive atmosphere due to dust may occasionally occur. It is intended for use in Zone 21, where an explosive dust atmosphere is expected to occur during normal operation.
D: Dust – The device is certified for use in dust-explosive environments.

2. Ex
This stands for "explosion-proof" and indicates that the device has been tested and certified according to the ATEX directive requirements.

3. ib
ib: Intrinsic safety – This protection method ensures that the electrical circuits of the device are designed to prevent sparks or thermal effects that could ignite a dust atmosphere. ib is certified for use in Zone 21, where explosive dust atmospheres may occasionally occur.

4. mb
mb: Encapsulation – This protection method ensures that electrical components are housed in a potted or encapsulated enclosure, preventing dust from entering the electronics and causing ignition. This helps avoid the creation of ignition sources from electrical components.

5. IIIC
IIIC: Dust group – This classification indicates that the device is suitable for use with conductive dust, which can be particularly dangerous (e.g., metal dust). IIIC is the highest dust group, covering both conductive and non-conductive dusts (IIIA and IIIB).

6. T135°C
T135°C: Temperature class – This indicates the maximum surface temperature of the device. T135°C means the surface temperature of the device will not exceed 135°C. This is important because dust can settle on surfaces and ignite if the temperature is too high. This classification ensures the device does not reach a temperature that could trigger a dust explosion.

7. Db
Db: Equipment protection level – This protection level indicates that the device is suitable for use in Zone 21, where explosive dust atmospheres are likely during normal operation. Db offers a high level of protection, though slightly lower than the highest protection level Da.

Summary:
The device is suitable for use in dust-explosive environments (Zone 21).
It provides protection through intrinsic safety (ib) and encapsulation (mb), preventing dust from entering the electronics or creating ignition sources.
It is certified for use with conductive dust (IIIC), considered particularly hazardous.
The device's maximum surface temperature is 135°C, ensuring that settled dust will not ignite.
The Db protection level provides a high degree of safety for use in areas where dust atmospheres are regularly present.
This device is specifically designed for use in explosive dust environments and ensures comprehensive protection against potential ignition sources and explosions.
